St Lucy’s Day, Syracuse On December 13, the statue, placed on a rich litter, is carried in a slow procession, form the Cathedral to the Church of Saint Lucy at the Sepulchre; the procession is followed by a 18th century rococo coach, pulled by four horses, escorted by personages in genuine costume of that time. In the whole town it is a great festivity, with popular games and stands. The statue will stay exposed in the sanctuary eight days to come back later to the Cathedral with another big procession, music and illuminations. During the days dedicated to the Saint, it is the custom to prepare the “uccioli”, votive breads eye-shaped, and the “cuccìa”, a cake of wheat (cooked in the water or milk) with ricotta or honey.
